An Announcement about the Test Application of GPA System for Undergraduate Marking at Xiamen University

In order to motivate the students’ learning enthusiasm, to promote the credit system reform, so as to enhance the internationalization level of our undergraduate education, we hereby put forward the XMU GPA System for undergraduate marking, which has been created according to the situation of XMU and with reference from the domestic and overseas colleges and universities which use the GPA System. Details are as follows:

  

1.The Definition of GPA

The Grade Point Average (GPA) is the weighted average of the credits of various courses that the students have taken. GPA is an important indicator which helps to measure students’ academic proficiency.

  

2.Method of calculating GPA

One single course GPA=credits of the course ×GPA

Total course GPA = Σ one single course credit GPA

Total course credits = Σ one single course credits

  

Course average GPA =

Total course GPA

Total course credits

  

3.Relevant Explanation for GPA Scale

1)Conversion between course credits and GPA as below:

2)The previous four-level marking system are to be converted to GPA, in which Excellent (85-100) corresponds to GPA 4.0, Good (70-84) corresponds to GPA 3.0, Pass (60-69) corresponds to GPA 1.3, Fail (not up to 60) corresponds to GPA 0. The two-level marking system (Qualified and Unqualified) is not to be accepted for GPA calculation. And starting from the academic year (2012-2013) the four-level marking will no longer be applied.

3)The previous documents like “Regulations of Undergraduates Registration at XMU (File No.38, 2005, Academic Affairs Office, XMU) and “Regulations of Undergraduate Examination Management at XMU” (File No.21, 2005, Academic Affairs Office, XMU) will be no longer in force should any part of the contents be contradictory to the present document.

4)Academic Affairs Office reserves the right of interpretation. This document shall take effect as of the day of its announcing.
